Page Two · Notices, Advertisements & Small BillsSituations Wanted — One fiddler seeks steady evening work, weddings and wakes alike, repertoire cheerful and loud. The cat is not included and never was. Enquire care of this paper.
Lost — One sheep, greyish, answers to nothing in particular and comes home only when it pleases. Last seen drifting the low meadow. Steer her toward Bo-Peep down Westler Road — there is a ribbon in it for you.
The Almanac
Fair mornings and a low mist off the valley through week's end, with rain likely by the Sabbath. The moon waxes full come Friday; the hens have been restless accordingly, and one goose insufferable.
For Sale — A fine length of rope, scarcely used and guaranteed to hold a grown boy's weight — do not ask how we came to know it. Ask for Peter at the Mercantile.
Found — One water pail, dented at the rim and stamped "Crown Co.," recovered at the foot of the big hill. Two young ones came down after it in a considerable hurry. Claim it at the Baskins place.
Services — Character lines read and kindly interpreted by lamplight. Discretion assured, futures not guaranteed. Ask for Gramma G — knock gently, for she tires easily now.
At Market This Week
Eggs a-plenty and cheap, the hens having quite outdone themselves. Wool grown scarce of late (see Lost, above). Sweet cream up a penny on account of the warm spell, and worth every one of them.
Wanted — One patient soul to mind an opinionated goose named Petra for an afternoon. She bites, she scrounges, she overstays her welcome. Enquire at the Rhymes household, where Gramma is poorly and cannot chase her this week.
Notices — The Schoolhouse enrolls its new term come the next harvest moon. Slates provided; manners expected; spiders firmly discouraged, following the unpleasantness with young Miss Muffet.
To Let — A snug cottage near the crooked stile, one room and a good stone hearth, lately home to a gentleman who kept mostly to a wall and came down all at once. Sound as ever. Enquire at the Mercantile.
Personal — Willie W. keeps his nightly watch as ever, up and down the lanes past the eight-o'clock bell. Draw your curtains or don't — he only means to see the valley safely abed.
Meetings — His Majesty holds court this fortnight upon a weighty matter of poultry — whether the bird in question be rightly a goose or a duck. Petitions heard at the castle; pipe and bowl provided.
A Word from the Bakery — Pies of every honest filling and none of the other kind. We should like to lay that particular rumour to rest once and for all: the boy is perfectly fine. Come taste and see.
In Closing — The Voice thanks its good merchants and its patient readers both. Notices for next issue may be left at the Mercantile counter before the harvest moon.
