About The Second Side

I grew up thinking I knew what fairy tales were all about.

Then an idea crept into my mind at the age of 16yrs. "What if Beast told the story of 'Beauty and the Beast'? How different would that be?"

Time passed, and I started looking at all fairy tales from that angle. A second side of stories.

The Second Side was born!

I will say this, it took decades before the idea for telling the back stories to Mother Goose came along. Though folklore & fables followed within a couple years.

A question popped up - Has anyone ever put the whole land of Make Believe (Fairy Tales, Nursery Rhymes, Folklore & Fables) under the same roof before?

As far as I know, it has never been attempted. After thinking about it, and ALL the work that would come with it, I decided this was an adventure worth exploring!

Rules of the Game

In sitting down with the first novel I ever wrote, 'Reversal of Beauty', I knew then that I had to set down some ground rules to make sure I stayed consistent.

***

Here they are -

  • 1. All the main events have to happen. (Cinderella gets the glass slipper) Just how we get from point A to point B is quite different which in turn changed the tone of the story.
  • 2. Contractions can be used in the descriptions and the exposition, but NOT in dialogue. (Fairy tales only)
  • 3. There is some form of logic behind why the stories happened the way they did. (i.e - Cinderella has OCD)
