The Arts

— This Season’s Piece —

The Beholder’s Eyes

A child’s drawing in colored wax on crumpled paper, titled ME & MOM: a tall figure in purple holding hands with a smaller figure in blue, beside a green tree under a yellow sun.

“Me & Mom,” colored wax on paper. Drawn by Mildred Haley, age 7. Submitted by her mother.

Art is in the eye of the beholder. Many would look at this particular piece and think, “This isn’t art but a young child’s drawing.”

And I would reply to you with, both could be true at the same time. You are right, a child drew this. However, for the mother she drew this for, it is the most beautiful image that has ever been seen by her eyes. To her it is art, even if it was created by her seven year old daughter.

Many say art is that of the beholder. I say, if you enjoy the beauty of what you are looking at, you should be able to call it whatever you want!

Now — Go paint the world.
