The Bakery

Bakery Symmetrical Cases

THE FAR SIDE OF THE CRICK — You'll smell the bakery long before you see it. Something like fresh valley rolls, pastries galore, and even Mr. Haskel's famous Popberry Pie! The smells drift from evert direction and pull you across the footbridge by your nose. Inside, the oven house is always roaring, flour hangs in the sunbeams, and there's a clatter of pie tins.

Behind the Counter

Mr. Haskel — the town's new, famous baker, and famous is no exaggeration. The town put in the biggest oven house door you ever did see just to coax him here. He's a mumbler and a dodder, forever jabbering to himself about berries and batter, but the man bakes like he's got magic in his elbows. Just don't climb into his pie tins — one Westler boy is famous for learning why.

Out of the Oven House

  • Popberry Pie — the famous one. Made with the sweetest berries in this land or the next, and the reason folks cross the footbridge with empty baskets.
  • Westler Nut Pie — come Minadiddy season, folks line up clean past the creek for it.
  • Candy cookie pie and sweet mud cobbler
  • Crusty morning loaves, still warm if you're quick

Current Special

Harvest-time Popberry hand pies — small enough for one pocket, sweet enough for two people. One free to any child who promises NOT to climb into the big tin.

Ducket Stories on the Counter

This shop turns up in Goober and I, the way Matta tells it — "walking by the bakery… our new, famous baker, Mr. Haskel." He had only just come to Westler then, and the town had already put in the biggest oven house door you ever did see to coax him here.
