THE SCHOOLHOUSE, WESTLER — I think it's finally time to tell you about George Porgie, my little rascals. I guess you could say that I didn't care much for him when we first met. Then, once I got to knowin' the boy and why he was … well, the way George Porgie was, I felt for him.
Alright, when did I first meet him? I was just a child when his family moved to the edge of town. I believe his father was a coal miner.
As he came into our schoolhouse, you'd have thought he was a king – way too big for his britches. He was handsome, to be sure. When he moved, he stood tall and walked with confidence. I swear all the girls released a collective swoonin' sigh as he made his way up to the front of the room and handed over his registration papers to Mrs. Markum.
I knew, as he passed me, there was somethin' different about him. Some kind of sadness that rested in his eyes, which suggested he had seen some things.
