HOBBLE HILL, WESTLER — Good evening to you, my little rascals! That old woman just mentioned is none other than Mrs. Matilda Norus, and she was at her wit's end when I ran into her the other day. She had always been a dear friend to my family growin' up, and she had the biggest heart. Though that big heart came with loose lips. She sure did know how to jabber on about the town gossip.
Mrs. Norus never had children until much later in life, and then poof! Eight of them popped right out - one right after the other. Eight!
I struggle with the idea of havin' one child, let alone eight. (My hats off to all you parents in this land AND the next!)
Her husband was a sailor who practically lived on the high seas. Once, when she jabberin' on about him, she mentioned that he was gonna move up to captain soon enough. He had already been promised a ship, but he was required to do one last voyage to some far-off land with a name I couldn't pronounce if I tried.
Mrs. Norus was pretty poor, as you can imagine, with eight children. What little she had went towards food. However, as the family received word that they were a month away from losin' their home; I figered out a way that they could get another one.
