A Little About the Stories
The Old Woman
Matta and Petra follow a song through the wheat field and find an old woman happily dancing with her wet laundry. Petra hates water more than anything, but this stranger might be the one person who can get her into a bath without a fight.
The Purple Cow
A two-part story.
A strange new girl named Amerista shows up at the schoolhouse, afraid of make-believe creatures she calls Narfers. Months later, she and the girls wake Matta in the middle of the night: Amerista has just seen the purple cow over at the Jenkins farm!
Little Miss Tucket
A two-part story.
Maggie Wentsfield's rich cousin, Tuck, comes to stay in Westler for a month, and it turns out she can't stand Maggie either. When Tuck slips Matta a note that says "Help," Matta starts a schoolhouse fight on purpose, and an unlikely friendship begins.
Up in the Green Orchard
Gramma G tells the legend of the honey-cinnamon apple tree up in Green Orchard: if the first apple hits the ground, next year's harvest is ruined. Matta joins the Adams family's long watch under the tree, and Petra waddles up to help.
The Little Mouse
A three-part story.
Matta heads off to visit Amerista and Horace the mouse, and finds a surprise stowaway sleeping under her bonnet in the carriage. When they arrive, Amerista has a problem: the snooty new neighbors' cat keeps going after Horace.
One for the Money
A two-part story.
It's Field Day at the schoolhouse, and the whole town turns out to cheer. Matta lands on Miles Fray's team, pitching against her old enemy, his little brother Michael, while Mr. Fray has a bet riding on the day.
Mary, Mary
A two-part story.
A terrible drought hits the Rhymes farm the summer cousin Mary comes to stay, and Pa is at his wit's end. Mary says the answer is in The Old Wives' Tales of Westler: bells, cockleshells, and garden maids all in a row. Matta calls it hooey.
Molly, My Sister
A two-part story.
Lori falls in with Maggie Wentsfield's crowd and turns into someone Matta hardly knows. When Lori pushes a cup of coffee on tea-loving Matta at the pig pen, the sisters have the worst fight of their lives.
Little Jumping Joan
Gramma G tells Matta why her classmates once called her Little Jumping Joan, and how a spoonful of lim lim beans was supposed to fix her clumsy hands. It's a tale of name-calling, a flick of bean mush, and one Wentsfield who turned out to be kind.
Pat-A-Cake
A four-part story.
Grown-up Matta is sneaking slices of Popberry pie at Mr. Haskel's bakery when a spoonful of berries hits her right in the face. Miles Fray is back in town, and he wants Matta to bake him a pie for the Minadiddy. Matta does NOT bake.
